Lanimer Day
Lanark, Scotland
June 6, 2002
.I opened the door to my cottage at Bankhead
Farms....another beautiful day and what do I hear? BAGPIPES!!! It
was like living a dream! The day was special in Lanark...it
was Lanimer Day. Under a historic
formula Lanimer Day always takes place between the 6th and 12th
day of June and consequently, for example, Lanimer Day 2003 will be 12th
June 2003.
If you have ever lived in Lanark, you come home on that day.
The preparations are massive and they shut down the town to practice on
the nights before the festivities. People decorate their yards and
house with banners. I set out walking to the parade because there
was no way my friends could make it through town to pick me up. I have
learned that ever thing in Scotland was built on a side hill and Lanark is
no exception. About 5 minutes into my walk I was getting tired but I
was spurred on by the couple in front of me. She was wearing
2" heels and had set a pace that I was determined to keep also. If
she could do it in heels, I could do it in my Reebok walking shoes.
I was impressed with the Ross Clan, who put this display, depicting the
"Stone of Destiny" in their yard.
The Parade Committee must be
the world's best because the Parade was magnificent! My pictures do
NOT do it justice. The pageantry was wonderful and the parade went
by TWICE. The second time the participants had been judged and
proudly displayed their awards. Great Idea!!!
If anyone would like to add a caption to any of the pictures,
